Wild Backyard

Sketchy, but a pleasant dream while I was having it. :)

In real life I scatter birdseed, and occasionally other scraps, out on the front porch. As a result we have had varied visitors, including sparrows, chickadees, mourning doves, indigo buntings, mice, possums, raccoons, skunks, a rabbit, and even a stray cat who is a dead ringer for my deceased cat Pepper. I particularly favor the rabbit and the cat, and I'm often checking the porch just to see if there's anything hanging out out there.

Well, in my dream I believe I must have gone to go check the porch and every time I did, I noticed something NEW had shown up. I can't remember the order nor all of the animals I spied by now. There were lots of people around the house and the layout kept changing so it hardly resembled my house. I think at first I saw that some birds (or rodents) had taken up residence in a special nest they had built hanging over the porch on the right side--it seemed to be beneath some eaves even though there are none there, just open air. (The roof is to the left; the porch is like set into a corner, and to the right of it is like this little flowering tree or bush, and beyond that is the front of the house. The porch is bordered on the left by the house itself, and on the right by an iron railing just beside the tree/bush; steps lead down from the porch itself to a little walkway toward the driveway.) I was surprised by these little creatures nesting so nearby and watched them go in and out of the opening of the nest, which seemed contained (that is, not open to the air aside from a little round hole). I have written down "tossing stuff from nest, I peek in?" so maybe the creatures were tossing something out onto the porch and that caught my attention--maybe I tried to avoid being hit--and maybe I tried peeking into the nest itself to see what it was like.

I kept leaving and coming back. On one occasion I spied a big raccoon, then a little one not far behind it! So cute! I wondered if they were the same two raccoons I saw on the porch in real life once before, though those two were the same size. The small one was further down toward the yard. The time of day seemed to keep shifting in the dream too, for when I looked again it seemed to be evening or nighttime yet I could still see, and now I spied some sort of large rodent on the porch. It looked like a reddish-colored prairie dog! :D It was so cute! And even when it saw me, it stayed, and even came closer to the door! The door seemed like a screen door now, not solid with windows in it, since I crouched down and peered through the screen at it and even said, "Hello!" I was so amazed by how tame it was; it looked like it wanted to come in or be petted. I think I was going to get some special food to give to it. But I wasn't even sure what it was. I think I said to it, "Are you a groundhog?" Though I might have used a different term. Then I think I said, "No, wait--are you a prairie dog?" because that's what it looked like, after all. The animal just shuffled back and forth in front of the door, peeking in.

A young man around my age or younger (I might have been teenaged or college age in the dream myself) approached and said, "That's a _____." The animal had one word as its name, a weird word which I can't remember in the least; all I know is it was a single word, not a compound word like "groundhog," and it was odd sounding, like some sort of foreign language name. That puzzled me since I had been thinking this was a prairie dog, but I guess I was wrong. I remember specifically that at one point the creature turned so I caught sight of its behind and it had this little stubby tail pressed close to it like that of a deer or rabbit. It looked almost exactly like a prairie dog except it was ruddy colored, and maybe a bit shaggier like a guinea pig. SO cute! ^_^

The young man with me impressed me with his knowledge and I felt a bit ignorant in his presence. He might have told me more. I sense he had brown hair kind of spiking out in different directions (not in a punk way, just in a rough-cut way--maybe like Clay Aiken's hair, that's the closest thing I can think of), was lean, but kind of cute. I felt a little flattered that he came up and talked to me. I went back into the house and there were all these people hanging out talking and maybe eating and the atmosphere was a lot more communal than in real life, but oddly I was not made anxious by this. I went back to the porch and again looked out and now it was almost as if the group of people extended outside as well; the layout was confusing. I think of a rough wooden bar, horizontal like a fence--lots of trees but some open ground area, like in the woods--maybe a wooden structure--off to the right. I want to say "camp" so maybe the communal atmosphere and the scenery made me think of camp. In any case far off to the right I now spied a doglike creature wandering around and gasped with delight. Ma was somewhere in the house and I leaned back and called out to her, "There's a wolf out here!...or a coyote. Probably a coyote. But it's out here!"

At first, it had looked like a wolf. Then as I studied it more, I realized it must be a coyote; the coloring and build were consistent with those of a coyote, plus, wild wolves do not live in this area! Still, although I've heard them howling in the distance, I've never seen a coyote in person, so this thrilled me, even if it was not as noble a creature as a wolf. :) BUT...I turned and studied the creature yet more (its back was to me)...and began to realize that it was not a coyote, either. It was a FOX!

It was the little white tip to the tail that tipped me off, no pun intended. ^_^ I think it was a gray fox or whatever they're called--the brownish-grayish kind, almost ticked coloring, with the dark markings on their muzzles. Not a red fox. I saw the white tip and then it turned its head and yes, that was exactly what it was, a fox! Well--I've never seen a FOX in person before, either, plus foxes are a LOT cooler than coyotes! In real life my dad talks about seeing them all the time, yet I've never spotted one. Here one was! :D "No, it's a FOX!" I yelled to Ma as it turned and ambled around. I was so delighted. I could not believe all the wonderful wildlife I was seeing today.

I think I went to get some food to toss out to the myriad animals outside. The guy might have explained further about the odd little prairie dog-like creature, and I think I really wanted to try to feed it personally since it seemed so friendly. There was a bit more of the dream regarding the group of people sitting around talking, but I can't recall it.

This dream might have been part of though not related to "Law & Order: Special Drag Unit."

Law & Order: Special Drag Unit

This is just a snippet of dream that seemed to run in with, though not be related to, "Wild Backyard."

I seemed to be watching Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Detectives Benson and Stabler were just being called out to investigate a case. Stabler had to cut short another case he'd been working on, possibly undercover, and he was just showing up as the show started and Benson was filling him in on what had happened so far. As I watched this I started to frown in puzzlement, as it seemed like Det. Stabler was...wearing lipstick. O_o At least, I could not understand why his thin lips seemed so red. He also appeared to be wearing a bit of rouge and maybe some eyeshadow. I kept staring at this, wondering if it was just me. But his lips had never seemed so red before.

Eventually I noticed that Det. Benson kept peeking at him and smirking surreptitiously as he looked over a paper or something about the case, and realized then that no, it was not just me. Stabler really WAS wearing women's makeup! I think he noticed his partner's looks and gave an exasperated sigh as they started looking around, and explained how he'd been dressed in drag for his previous case and had not had time to "dress down" for the next when he'd been called upon to investigate. So yes, Det. Stabler was here wearing women's makeup. I seem to recall the two of them standing on a stoop, maybe in front of the station, with him higher up and looking through something with some impatience while Benson smirked at him. Well...at least he wasn't in all-out drag getup, and at least it had not been just me imagining things.

Stabler in drag. Not a good mental image. Eugh. O_o
