The Eagle & The Earthquake

This is an old dream. It's from October of 1989; this much I know because of what happened after I had it, though I'm posting it under an "unknown" date as it's so old.

Basically all I remember is I was outside and knew there had been an earthquake. This is weird because earthquakes aren't common in Michigan; at least, I don't ever remember us having any. (In terms of natural disasters I usually dream about the much more common tornadoes instead.) I was outside on the pavement and went onto the porch to assess any damage.

I seem to remember papers being scattered on the porch, down the cement steps toward the basement, though maybe that's mixed up with what I saw next. I went further into the house and to my bedroom. In here, it was a mess--not as messy as it was in real life, but messy in an odd way. There were papers EVERYWHERE, all over the floor. Just scattered all over like file cabinets had been knocked over or something; no idea why there was so much paper. I also noticed another casualty of the quake and went over to pick it up.

It was an eagle-shaped wine bottle. This is an object I actually possess in real life--it's made of green glass and is in the shape of an eagle with its wings folded next to its body; its head is the top of the bottle, and can be removed and used as a little drinking glass. My dad gave it to me long ago and I had him spraypaint it gold so I could pretend it was an Egyptian artifact. In my dream I found it in my room, where the quake had knocked it over. I saw that one of its wings, even though they were folded next to the body, had been sheared clean off; my eagle bottle was broken.

When I awoke from this dream, I told my parents about it; I can't remember why, maybe because I found it so unusual. It's the only dream I've had about an earthquake before or since.

Later on that day, the 1989 San Francisco earthquake struck.
