Bad Black Rat

This is going on just the vague bits I remember, so I have to fill it in pretty much.

A rodent had been making chewing noises in the wall. I was quite perturbed by this and wondered what kind of rodent it was. Somehow it got into the main part of the house and I was surprised to learn it was not a squirrel or a mouse, but a rat--a large black rat. I had not even known we had wild black rats; it looked like somebody's pet. It was wandering around the house and wasn't running away from me at any great speed so I wondered if it was tame. Every time I went toward it it just kind of wandered around and I started liking it; it was about the size of my deceased white rat, Katchoo. I wondered if it would make a good pet.

I think it even followed me around some. At some point I ended up in my room sitting on my floor and the rat was there near me; there seemed to be something on my floor, maybe a wooden construction of some kind, perhaps for the rat? In any case, feeling cheery, I reached out to pet it since it was so friendly. The rat didn't like this though, and pulled away, then tried to bite me. I quickly pulled my hand away but the rat was intent on coming after me--I started backing away, but it kept moving toward me, trying to bite me. It wasn't all crazy jumping all over me chomping and chewing, but it was acting quite irritated. Like a cat when you start to get it angry--you know how they keep coming after you, in no great hurry, but you just know that eventually they will jump on you with their claws extended? That's how this rat was acting.

"Sheesh!" I cried, jumping up and still trying to get away from it. It still followed me. "If this is the way you're going to act then I wish I'd never TRIED having you as a pet!" And I continued trying to escape from the angry little creature.

This dream was definitely influenced by real life the day before, when a rodent chewing inside one of the upstairs walls became so noisy and continuous that I went upstairs and struck a broomhandle against the wall as hard as I could, over and over, and yelled, trying to get it to just stop. Oddly enough, though that rodent has been busy up there chewing for at least the past two or three days (and though we had been knocking on the walls previously), I have not heard it up there since. But I believe the rodent in question is a flying squirrel--definitely not a rat.
