Out Of Bounds

I remembered this a while after awakening, and it's only a little bit that I remembered.

Basically I was on Mackinac Island (only it felt like it was supposed to be the mainland too, kind of, like I wasn't as far away from home), poking around the outside of what was supposed to be Fort Mackinac. Aside from it having a white limestone wall and a blockhouse, however, it did not look anything like that. Instead of being upon a bluff overlooking the town, it was on mostly level (though kind of rolling, gently sloping) ground out in the middle of the country, surrounded by tall, dryish grass and clumps of trees further off. Very peaceful and I think it was summer. Maybe overcast but nice. The wall was low and I do recall seeing one blockhouse. I was walking around the outside of the wall and mostly looking at the ground. I know I was seeking something. This is very vague. I think I started to wander away from the fort but then I remembered I wanted to look for sinkholes and some other natural phenomena I had seen referred to on a map or some such, and there was the feeling of, "Oh, I'd better do that before I run out of time! How could I forget when that's the main reason why I'm here??" I returned to the fort and commenced looking around again for sinkholes, or little depressions in the ground, to see if they still existed.

At some point I was also walking around in some woods which would have been to the left of my main idea of the fort, and I passed by or over a brook. I think it was supposed to be Brown's Brook (a real location on the island), but then maybe it was part of Croghan Water (ditto). Again, there was a feeling of this being a much older site that I didn't know very well, and I seemed to be looking at the ground more closely. It did somewhat resemble the old Brown's Brook (before it was renovated in 2003), just this meander of water trickling across the ground in the woods; the earth was dark reddish-brown, maybe loamy and moist. I do not think the trees were cedars but they might have been.

Most of the dream I spent walking around the outside of the fort wall. The fort was much smaller than in real life and seemed to be basically that wall, built in an odd shape (it wasn't square, just some kind of odd warped shape), and a small blockhouse which seemed to be plain wood rather than painted or whitewashed. I don't recall seeing anything else inside it, and there were no people around; just me.
