I Wanna Be Adopted, Too!

Just a vague bit. I was looking at something that had to do with Native American Indians, probably Ottawa and/or Ojibwa because they were supposed to be local and affiliated with the casinos. It was nighttime and I was at home. Ma might have handed me the thing I was interested in looking at and she looked at me and said, "You do know that the tribe adopted me, don't you?"

By "adopted," she meant some sort of ceremonial/ritual adoption, as a member of their tribe, not anything familial. I felt it had something to do with her going to the casino (she goes every week). I didn't reply to her comment but instead looked at this book or whatever. It was a drawing of a lot of tomatoes, just tomatoes on this plain white background. Underneath you could see the rough pencil sketch of the tomatoes, and then over that had been painted the tomatoes in red; the finished paintings didn't exactly match the rough penciled outlines, and at least one of the tomatoes was misshapen in an odd way, with like a circle or oval drawn in it. I knew that the tomato had some significance to the Native Americans--supposedly it was the first fruit that was created or something like that, and so it was sacred to them as a symbol of life.

I didn't say anything to Ma, but I felt very jealous. I wanted to be adopted by a tribe, too. I mean, I'm the one with all the interest in Native Americans and their mythology, and Ma just goes to the casino once a week! Why had she been adopted and I hadn't? :(

No real-life associations I can think of, though in the dream I seemed to confuse the tomato with the strawberry, and perhaps a little bit with corn. There IS an Ojibwa myth regarding the creation of the strawberry and it was called the "heart berry," or "Odaemin," because of its resemblance to the human heart; the mythological character of Odaemin (strawberry personified as a man) also had a relation to a myth regarding death and resurrection and the Midewiwin (Grand Medicine Society) or some such; I forget the specifics at the moment. So in the dream for some reason the tomato stood in for the strawberry--though ALSO, in the dream I think the name I thought of was Mandamin (Mondawmin?), the name of CORN, another important mythological figure. So I seem to have had my fruits and vegetables mildly confused here. O_o
